For a lot of people, dancing and drinking go hand in hand. With a buzz, you can actually dance without worrying about what other people think. If you do something foolish you can always blame it on the booze, right?
But when was the last time you thought about having all that same fun but with a twist: skip the hangover, save the money and be kind to your brain?
Well, in case you want to give it a try this winter, there are two different no booze dance nights here in Whitehorse for you to choose from:
Whitehorse Dance Gathering
Whitehorse Dance Gathering, aka "the DG," was started in 2009 by former Yukon dance instructor Jessica Hickman. Over the years, it switched hands and now I am currently organizing the monthly dances. They are let-loose-shake-stretch-sweat-swing events with an hour-and-a-half mixed playlist that includes world music, electronic, blues, funk, pop, psytrance, hip hop, oldies, classical, reggae, rock and roll, and more. The music starts and ends slow, but picks up in the middle so that you can let out your inner dance animal.
The next dance is on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 8 p.m. (doors open at 7:45 p.m. and lock for entry at 8:15 p.m.) The location is the Association Franco-Yukonnaise, which is at 302 Strickland St. The entrance fee is by donation.
For more information please contact WhitehorseDanceGathering@gmail.com to be added to the email list, or go to the Yukon Dance Gathering page on Facebook.
Whitehorse - Just Dance
The Whitehorse - Just Dance monthly events are put on by Steve Potter as an outlet for his joint passions of dancing, DJaying and community. Hailing from the United Kingdom, he spent most of the ’90s running record labels, promoting events and producing music in Birmingham, England. Now a family man, he doesn't have the time to go out all night – but isn't ready to hang up his dancing shoes just yet. He brings this deep love and knowledge of all kinds of music (house/reggae/’80s/disco/hip-hop) to Just Dance. An acupuncturist by day, he also aims to combine the dance night with his interest in meditation and bodywork to create an event that is fun, meditative and healing.
The next dance is coming up on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 7:30 p.m. These also take place at the Association Franco-Yukonnaise at 302 Strickland St. The entrance fee is $10.

See you on the dance floor!
