Gifts That Keep Giving

Trees are gifts that truly keep on giving.

They increase oxygen in the air, absorb carbons, recycle moisture into the atmosphere, filter harmful pollutants, prevent soil erosion and create shade and shelter in the landscape.

A new tree is a wonderful addition to any garden. Start by selecting the right tree for the right location. It is important to choose a tree with biological needs that match your landscape.

Visit a local tree nursery to determine what tree best suits your landscape. The shape and size at maturity, and its purpose in the garden, should be taken into consideration. How tall will it grow? What shape will it be? Be conscious of the scale of your garden.

Prior to transplanting, the root ball of the tree must be kept moist. Keep your new tree in a shaded area and avoid direct sunlight. Trees are best transplanted during cooler evenings. Try to avoid planting during hot sunny days.

The depth of planting is equally as important. Trees are often planted too deep, resulting in years of recovery. The flare of the root system and height of the root ball will determine the planting depth. Trees planted in a windy location will require added stake support for their first year or two.

For necessary nutrients, try using Jobe’s Organic Fertilizer Spikes for Trees and Shrubs. These enviro-friendly spikes are easy to use – just hammer into place at the drip line for a continuous supply of nutrients to the feeder roots.

Newly planted trees should be watered a minimum of twice per week. Regular watering is recommended during the first few years following the transplant. In general, established trees require five centimetres of rainfall each week.

A new tree can be a wonderful addition to any home and landscape. By carefully selecting the right tree, for the right location, you contribute to caring for the environment while providing a gift that will be enjoyed for generations to come.
