Genticorum, a traditional band from Québec, will perform on November 2 in the community hall at the Centre de la francophonie on Strickland Street.

The band is well-known on the traditional music scene, both in Canada and abroad.

With four albums so far, Genticorum shows no signs of slowing down the machine. The energy of the three multi-instrumentalists impresses crowds around the world, and has earned them both Juno and Félix (ADISQ) award nominations.

This fall, they hit the road bound for Western and Northern Canada.

Yann Falquet (vocals, guitar and jaw harp), Alexandre de Grosbois-Garand (vocals, flute, fiddle and bass) and Pascal Gemme (vocals, foot percussion and fiddle) have a real joie de vivre on stage. They just have a little something really simple and accessible.

Blending traditional, folk and celtic styles, the band finds inspiration in travel storytelling from the people who first explored North America, as demonstrated on its latest album, Nagez Rameurs.

Genticorum performed at the Atlin Arts and Music Festival three years ago. Their return to this area next Wednesday is only for one night.

The trio’s goal is simple: make people dance. Don’t miss the chance to see them; it’s obvious that they have fun onstage and want to share it with you!

Yukon Women in Music

On Friday, November 4, Yukon Women in Music will be back at the Centre de la francophonie for a show in French.

Anglophone and francophone musicians and singers will share the francophone music they like – both original music and older successes.

Selina Heyligers-Hare, Emma Dubé, Sylvie Painchaud, Fawn Fritzen, Hélène Beaulieu and Nicole Edwards will perform for this joyful night.

Whitehorse audiences may remember what a great musical moment the first edition of this event was last year.

Professional female musicians taking the challenge of playing in another language is always interesting for the audience. It’s also a good occasion to get together and share a common passion.

Gala de la francophonie 2011

The Gala de la francophonie is also back! Well-known within Yukon’s francophone community, this variety show/gala is the biggest French event of the year.

The show, which has been presented since 1994, honours those who have worked hard for the development of francophone services. It’s also an occasion to feature francophone musicians, actors, dancers and visual artists onstage, and for participants to see the personality of the francophone community.

The theme of the 2011 Gala, Voices, yesterday and today, speaks to how the voice is a medium of communication through singing, talking, making sounds to an audience, on the radio, on recordings, etc.

This year, the show will honoured the 25 years of the Emission Rencontres, the francophone radio show on CBC North, as well as the volunteer technicians, broadcasters and producers, both past and present, who have made it successful.

The Gala de la francophonie is an important representation of the artistic community in French – artists and volunteers have worked since the beginning of the season on this two-hour, multi-disciplinary performance and awards program, under artistic director Robert Gagnon and musical director Hélène Beaulieu.

The house band for the Gala de la francophonie (Hélène Beaulieu, Christian Lesage, William Auclair-Bellemare and Thibault Rondel) is currently rehearsing for this performance, which will take place November 11 at the Yukon Art Centre at 7:30 p.m.
