The Rendezvous event called Her Majesty’s Royal Feast is an elegant evening with a 5-course meal on Feb. 13 at the KDCC
In its second year, Her Majesty’s Royal Feast was created to give the Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous Queen candidates a high class venue to deliver one of the most important components of the competition: their speeches.
On their journey in the Quest for the Crown competition, the Queen candidates go through many contests in hopes to be crowned Queen.
“This event is important to the competition because it provides the high class, professional, elegant event that we wanted so that our candidate speeches could be properly highlighted,” said Queen Mom Marjie Cowell. The Queen Mom manages the event and the queens.
The formal, black tie event is open to the public and allows the candidates’ family and friends to come and support them. Live classical music will be played throughout the evening by My Fabulous String Quartet, who also played last year. “Their music provided an extra feel of class to the atmosphere,” said Heather Anderson, who is on the Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous board of directors.
The current Rendezvous Queen and her Court play host to this event and share the MC duties throughout the night.
“[Last year] the evening was amazing. It ran flawlessly, the food was impeccable and the candidates shone brightly as the lights on the stage, as they each fearlessly delivered their timed speeches,” Cowell said. “I was a very proud Queen Mom that night.”
The event has a unique focus on the 1898 etiquette and touches on some of the more “quirky” rules of those days. Some examples include eating your soup and keeping up your appearance. Soup is always served for the first course and should be eaten with dessert spoons. Servings are taken from the sides, not the tips of the spoon and without any sounds of the lips. The must not be sucked into the mouth audibly from the ends of the spoon. Drink your soup from the side of the spoon. In addition, do not groom at the table – including lipstick or picking at your teeth.
In addition to the costumes and elegance of the evening is a five course meal, with each course prepared by a different local business.
“The food was amazing last year and will be again this year,” Cowell said. “There are also some new features being added this year, such as the valet service for our guests.” This service will be provided by the Boys and Girls Club Yukon.
The meal is sponsored by six local caterers: Antoinette’s Restaurant providing the soup, The Wayfarer Oyster Bar providing the appetizer, Bridges Café providing the salad, The Wandering Bison providing the entrée, Klondike Cakes providing the dessert, and Home Sweet Home Baking providing the dinner rolls. “Rendezvous is always proud to be able to support and promote the amazing local chefs Whitehorse has to offer,” Anderson said.
Davy Joly Investors Group presents Her Majesty’s Royal Feast on Tuesday, February 13 at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre in the Longhouse. Doors open at 6 p.m.
