On Saturday, September 29 organizations, communities and individuals across the country will celebrate sport by taking part in Sports Day in Canada.

Sports Day in Canada is a national celebration of sport of all different kinds and at all levels.

On the ground, in the week leading up to September 29, over 1,000 organizations, schools, teams and towns will hold a blitz of events, with community-wide festivals, try-it days, open houses, games, competitions, meet-and-greets, tournaments, fun runs, spectator events and pep rallies that celebrate sport.

In Whitehorse the Canada Games Centre will open its doors for this city’s portion of the national event. The centre will offer free admission from 7 a.m. until noon.

Organizers plan to fill the halls, fields, rinks and pool with a wide range of activities to get everyone excited about participating in sport.

From 9 a.m. until noon, an array of community sport organizations will provide the public with opportunities to try out their sports and get involved.

Participants can choose to engage in demonstrations and clinics in bocce, shuffleboard, Arctic and Dene sports, bollyfit, zumba, synchronized swimming, hockey, aikido, underwater hockey, dance, tennis, and archery.

There will also be stations for face painting, temporary tattoos and colouring. And if all of that weren’t enough, a very special guest will grace the event with her presence.

Stephanie Dixon, Canadian Paralympic swimmer, will give presentations at both 10:30 and 11:30 a.m.

Dixon has been at the top of her classification in the Paralympics for over a decade. She set her first world record for the 100 m backstroke in 1998 and has been breaking records ever since.

Over three Paralympics games she has won 19 medals. It should be a treat for Yukon audiences to meet this inspiring Canadian.

The vision of Sports Day in Canada, now in its third year, is to reach out to all Canadians to build, solidify and celebrate the role of sport in our country through a dynamic, energetic and influential movement that inspires Canadians to move more.

The national day of sport celebration will be marked by a compelling television event airing on CBC Sports.

The Sports Day in Canada on CBC broadcast will profile standout community events from across the country that embody the Sports Day experience, unified by award-winning national sports anchor, Scott Russell.

From these communities, the broadcast will share the stories, the passion and the power of sport with Canadians.

The broadcast will include local community stories, live hits from local events including Whitehorse, interviews with key personalities and engaging discussions.

In order to get everyone pumped up for the fun and games of September 29, the day before has been designated National Jersey Day.

Friday, September 28 is a national day to show your love and support for sport by wearing a jersey, team or club uniform to school, work or play.
