Fit ‘n’ Healthy: A Real Book for Real Girls

There is a new book out there that I am so very excited about. So excited that I have been checking the bookstore shelves for weeks awaiting it’s arrival and it’s finally here. That book is called, Body Drama.

As I went to buy the book, I had to laugh as it was sitting beside another book for girls written by Mrs. Beckham.

A chuckle or three slipped out as I flipped through it. All of the “where to buy top of the line shoes” and “how to purchase and apply top of the line makeup” written by an anorexic.

How insignificant that book looks sitting beside one of this quality.

If you are a teenage girl or are the parent of a teen or pre-teen girl, this book is a must have.

Written by formal beauty queen Nancy Amanda Reed, this book is about “Real Girls, Real Bodies, Real Issues, Real Answers”.

Reed took pictures of over 400 real women and posted many of those pictures untouched in this book of hair, skin, nails, body shape, boobs and everything else.

With help from Dr. Angela Diaz, she answers all the questions teenage girls want to ask but never do. These questions or issues are broken down into what Reed calls, “dramas”.

As a role model for teenage girls, Reed uses no misleading illustrations or medical jargon. She uses real photos of real women with language that young girls will understand.

Though slightly touched on, this book is not solely about sex. Go ahead, have a moment for a sigh of relief here.

Some of the dramas discussed are:

• I eat the same as my friend, why am I overweight and she’s not?

• Why are my teeth not white and how can I fix it?

• I sweat a lot. Is this normal?

• How come I don’t look like those women in the magazines?

• I want to eat well, but it’s so expensive!

• How do I find the right bra?

• I feel fat!

• I have a moustache!

The goal of this book is to teach girls to know their body, love their body and own their body and it does just that.

Even as an adult woman reading this book, the number one thing I kept thinking throughout the book was, “Wow, I have none of these problems! If all I have is a little weight to keep off then boy I am doing great!”

Talk about a boost to ones’ self-esteem. And I am not the only one to think this way. I have lent this book to a few women since owning it over the last week and they have all had the same reaction. What a great resource.

What a great book.

Leave this book out in a place where your girls will be able to look at in in private and feel good knowing that they will gain some real knowledge and, along with it, some real self confidence.

Of course nothing will replace real communication with honest answers, but I know I will keep this book around for a long time for soccer teams, young clients and my own family and friends.

There is another thing that Reed can do to make this book even better and that’s write another one for adult women.
