The Yukon’s Gateway, Watson Lake, turns 25 years old this weekend.
And, to celebrate, the town’s residents will be throwing a carnival in Wye Lake Park.
Terry Colebrooke, the town’s recreation director, says on Saturday, June 13, the park will be filled with families enjoying carnival-themed food and activities.
There will be a clown creating creatures with balloons and painting faces; a palm reader will have a tent set up; and there will be a fish pond, hoop toss around milk jugs and bean bags thrown through holes in a clown’s face and a lollipop tree (will they get a lollipop or a lollipop with a prize attached?).
Children can buy 25-cent tickets and this money will be given to the youth groups that run the various events.
Other service groups will be raising money for their causes by selling cotton candy, ice cream, food, snacks and lemonade.
At 5 p.m., the town will be offering free hot dogs and hamburgers cooked over the barbecue along with salads. Then there will be cake — “It’s big,” says Colebrooke. “A big slab cake” — to celebrate the anniversary.
Colebrooke says she hopes the mayor and council will help serve the food at the barbecue.
Lana Rae will be there during the day to entertain the kids and, at night, her country band will join her for a family dance.
It is hoped that past mayors and council members will attend. And Colebrooke says the tourists and other visitors will join in the fun, too.
It begins at Wye Lake Park at 2 p.m. and goes to 10 p.m.
