This Rendezvous, The Battle of the Bands is going down, bringing together youth bands from across the territory to battle for top dog honors of the Yukon Music scene.

BOTB is presented each year by Bringing Youth Toward Equality (BYTE), and this year for the first time, in conjunction with Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous. “They are donating the space, the sound, everything that we need to make it possible. Their commitment to an all ages, youth friendly, substance free event has been wonderful,” says Shelby Maunder, Executive Director of BYTE.

“There is so much creativity here,” Shelby says of the great talent in the Yukon. “There are also resources for young musicians. Music Yukon is really passionate, the Commissioner presents a Youth showcase for music.”

Battle of the Bands is a one-night event for bands or musicians under 30. It is open to bands as well as individual singer/songwriters.

“We have a panel of judges, and we usually try to get some representatives from the music scene in Whitehorse. This year, we have past winners who will be judges.”

The participants have 12 minutes to perform for the judges, with no set genre of music. “It’s a pretty wide variety,” says Shelby. “It’ll be a diverse night of music!”

This year, bands competing will be Flora Colossus, The Ukes of Hazzard

The Brothers, Cymatic, Daniel MacKenzie and the junior and senior jazz bands from Vanier Catholic Secondary School.

Battle of the Bands takes place Friday night, February. 24, 2017 at the Ice Wireless Performance Tent.Tickets can be purchased at the Rendezvous Office, website.
