Jacob Scheier is a Toronto based poet, essayist and journalist. He is currently the Writer’s Trust of Canada’s Berton House Writer-in-Residence in Dawson City, Yukon (April-June, 2015).Scheier’s debut poetry collection, More to Keep us Warm (ECW Press) won the 2008 Governor General’s Award. His second collection, Letter from Brooklyn (ECW Press, 2013) was published in 2013 to critical acclaim. His poems have appeared in literary journals and magazine across North America, been aired on CBC and inspired a modern dance performance at the Enwave Theatre in Toronto. Last year Jacob was the runner up in IFOA’s (International Festival of Authors) “Battle of the Bards” competition. This earned him a spot reading at last year’s IFOA festival.He is also the co-winner of a 2009 New York Independent Media Alliance Award for best feature article and is a regular contributor to Toronto’s NOW Magazine. He is the author of the non-fiction eBook, My Never Ending Acid Trip, published by The Toronto Star in 2013. Scheier completed this project while a resident of the prestigious Banff Centre’s Literary Journalism program, chaired by Ian Brown. He is currently working on a collection of personal essays engaging Jewish secular identity and grief, entitled Torn and Cut People. An essay from this collection, “The Rabbi,” appeared this fall in the literary journal, Brick.
