On Saturday, Dec. 3 the kids get to shop. All by themselves, without parents watching over shoulders. It’s the perfect chance for them to buy Christmas presents for their family.

The Kids Shopping Hour is part of the Second Annual Christmas Market at The Old Firehall, which runs for two days: Friday, Dec. 2, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and on Saturday, Dec. 3 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event is organized by Elena Joss and Judy Matechuk, and they are pleased to be featuring the Kids Shopping Hour from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.

“This was done once, about 27 years ago, when my youngest was six, at a craft fair in the Edgewater Hotel,” says Judy Matechuk. “He went in and did his shopping for the family and was so proud that he had picked out the presents and paid for them himself. I think parents too often do the shopping because it’s easier, but kids miss that experience.”

For the Kids Shopping Hour parents will be able to send in their children, while they wait in a location nearby.

The kids can come in with a list, a budget and some money. There will be elves on-site to help them with their shopping. There will even be a gift wrap table available so the presents chosen will remain totally secret and the child can surprise the family with their gifts on Christmas morning.

The local synchronized swimming team has agreed to be the elves and a parent of a team member has volunteered to wrap the chosen presents. The market organizers will be giving a donation to the synchronized swimming team for their efforts.

Kids will have lots of gift ideas to choose from in their quest: cards, magnets, LocaRoca candy, soap, credit card protectors, spices, key chains, sewn items, kale chips and dessert toppings, all for under $10. As well, there will be jewelry organizers, jewelry, art, quilting, sewing, hair decorations, journals, body lotions, scarves, hats, wind chimes, headbands and much more for a variety of prices. And gifts for as little as $5.

The Second Annual Christmas Market will feature 23 vendors – veterans and newbies – from across the Yukon and northern British Columbia. Last year, the market was only one day, but this year, at the request of the vendors, it has grown to two days.

The Second Annual Christmas Market takes place at The Old Firehall on Front St. on  Friday and Saturday, Dec. 2 and 3. The special Kids Shopping Hour is on Saturday from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.
