On Oct 31st Whitehorse residents will have a chance to work up a sweat to some sweet electronica tunes at the second annual Masq dance party. There will be a full bar, photo booth, catering, music and a costume contest with prizes from Air North, Earl’s and Yukon Brewing.

The event is a fundraiser for Kona’s Coalition, a Whitehorse-based not-for-profit organization dedicated to animal welfare in the Yukon. Kona’s provides emergency care for animals who are injured, abandoned or abused, as well as providing funds for low-income pet owners whose animals need care they cannot afford. In 2014, the group spent approximately $60,00 on emergency animal care, says Masq II organizer and Kona’s Coalition Founding President Jordi Jones.

“We are the animal rights watchdog for the Yukon… it’s imperative that people know that we are not government funded,” says Jones. “Animals are property – they don’t have rights and we have to change that. This a public consultation (on animal rights) as well as a hella awesome party.”

Last year the event raised $10,000 for Kona’s, a number Jones says they are hoping to match again this year. She stresses that 100 per cent of the proceeds go to Kona’s Coalition, from ticket sales and from the bar, and that everyone at the event is a volunteer.

“I challenge people to think of (the ticket price) as a $25 donation for animal welfare,” she says.

Last year, two-time Juno nominated MC Flipside (Natale Pizzonia) flew in from Toronto to play for the crowd, and he’s back again this year “by popular demand,” says Jones.

“I love Whitehorse, it’s a beautiful town,” says Pizzonia. “Masq I was magical… the crowd really took a liking to what I was trying to do.”

While the music will primarily be Elecontronica, PIzzonia says he will also be playing house, trap and disco.

“I wanna show people all the different genres that have influenced me as an artist… my whole thing is this – I believe that music is the language of the soul and… I just want people to come out with an open mind, dance and have fun.”

Pizzonia is also an animal lover, and has a Himalayan cat.

“I think animals reflect the deepest part of our souls and I think Kona’s Coalition is a great cause,” he says.

Local Whitehorse musicians DJKJ and Dash will also be performing. Sets will be staggered, so that each musician performs twice in case people come late and don’t want to miss anything.

While the event is 19+ and alcohol will be served, Jones stresses she wants people to have a good time, but get home safe. There will be a water station and a safe ride home program.

The event takes place at the Kwanlin Dun Cultural Centre. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are available at Triple J’s Music, Tattoo and Piercings.
