When we moved to the Yukon, nearly six years ago, one of the pictures from Takhini Hot Pools Hair Freezing Contest had gone viral and my friend said, “I hope you are doing this.”

I’ve since learned that the annual competition has been around since 2011. The prizes have increased in value each winter. This year, they’ve reached such great heights (the value of all prizes totals more than $10,000) that 2020 has garnered more submissions than ever before.

The five categories for competition this year include best male, best female, best group, Nongshim’s people’s choice and Tim Hortons most creative. The winner for each category will receive $2,000, an unlimited pass for the current year, and some passes for the new hot springs facility, which begins construction later this year.

To enter the contest, go to the Takhini Hot Pools when the temperature is below -20 C. Pay regular admission and, once you’ve perfected your hairstyle, ring a doorbell to have a staff member take your photo. Before you leave the pools, sign up in the lobby to officially enter.

“For every entry into the contest five packs of Nongshim’s instant noodles will be donated to the Whitehorse Food Bank and Tim Hortons has agreed to donate a portion of each entry fee into the hot springs to The Outreach Van.”

The contest runs until March. Vote online. All winners will be announced April 1.
