Jessica Vellenga will offer antique lace pendants and cowls created from old sweaters. A graduate of McMaster University with study abroad experience at University of Leeds, England, Vellenga brings a wonderful fine arts sensibility to her work.
There will be at least 10 vendors with incredible products participating in re:design.
A personal favourite is the Old Fashioned Christmas Sale at the Old Log Church. It takes place Nov. 21 and 28 between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. It is different from other craft sales with heritage and vintage inspired ornaments and children’s toys. This year is the 8th annual sale, which is a fundraiser for the Yukon Church Heritage Society. It is a great opportunity to visit a heritage building and Whitehorse landmark.
Sugar Plum Craft Fair! Sounds fantastic, doesn’t it? Mark your calendars again: Nov. 28 and 29, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Westmark Whitehorse. Krista Klassen is the coordinator and a vendor. This is the third year for Sugar Plum. A stay-at-home mom, Klassen crafts for the love of creating and to pass on skills to her children. Thirteen participants will offer children’s clothing, jewelry, stationery and traditional beading. A variety of at-home businesses have also been invited to participate.
Christmas Market at The Old Fire Hall is organized by Judy Matechuk and she wants you to stay downtown after work on Friday, Dec. 4 and pop by. The sale runs noon to 7 p.m. and will include fabric artists, jewelry, prints, pottery and Loco Roca chocolates. It will be a nice mixture of new and established crafters.
Laura Prentice hosts the Littlest Art and Craft Fair this year on Saturday, Dec. 5 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. at 56 Carpiquet Rd. in Takhini North. This fair, in its 17th year, is organized by Lara Melnik.
There are other craft sales happening, too, so keep your eyes open for posters around town.
Craft Fairs Outside of Whitehorse
The communities will be busy with craft sales, too.
In Watson Lake the Liard Valley Literary Society will host a Christmas Craft Sale at the recreation centre on Nov. 28, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
In Dawson City, the Klondike Institute of Art and Culture is hosting an Art and Craft Fair on Nov. 28 from noon to 3 p.m. with proceeds going to the Odd Gallery.
Also in Dawson City a fundraiser for the Moosehide Gathering, called The Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in Last Minute Bazaar, takes place on Dec. 5 between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. in the Community Hall.
Nellie’s Tips For Craft Fair Shopping
Are you ready for adventure? There are so many wonderful places to shop for unique Yukon creations. Whether you are sending them to friends and family Outside or buying for yourself, your purchases will be treasured for many years to come.
I have a few tips; survival tips, if you will.
- Come with your own shopping bag and your gift list.
- Buy a treat for yourself.
- Come with your patience. There will be crowds and everyone will be looking at the exact same items you want to look at.
- Come with someone you love. Share the excitement of beautiful purchases with a friend.
- Come with your thank you’s – vendors really appreciate your support.
