The force is strong in our northern skiing communities. April 2, 2016 will mark the 30th annual Buckwheat Ski Classic weekend, open to Canadian and American skiers alike.

From just 14 participants in 1986, the race has grown significantly to over 400 skiers.

The Log Cabin Ski Society is going all out this year in celebration of this milestone anniversary. The theme, Ski Wars: May the Wax Be With You, will lure skiers outfitted in the most creative Star Wars garb from miles around.

Be it storm troopers, Jedi knights, Chewbacca or even an Ewok, there is a lot on the line for best costume. How does a weekend package to Skagway’s Upper Dewey Lake cabin including catering and a helicopter shuttle sound?

And if you don’t win the prize for best costume this year, don’t fret. Sith happens.

Ski conditions at Log Cabin have been great this year. There has been a good amount of snowfall in February and an ongoing, dedicated group of trail keepers continue to work on the trails. There is hope that the warming weather will not affect the conditions too terribly for race day.

It is important to note that race organizers have adjusted the start times to one-half hour later this year than in previous years to allow more time for border crossings. Still, it is recommended that you allow at least an extra half hour, especially if coming from Skagway, to make the start on time. Organizers say to expect lines at Fraser border crossing on way north to Log Cabin, and at the Skagway Port of Entry on way south after the race. Remember to bring your passport.

Racers can register online at http://buckwheatskiclassic.com in either the 5km (youth), 10km, 25km, or 50km events. Print registration forms are also available for Yukoners at Coast Mountain Sports.

Online registration will close on Sunday, March 27th, 2016 at 11:59 p.m. Late registrations will be accepted on March 31st at Sport Yukon in Whitehorse from 5-7 p.m., and on April 1 at AB Hall in Skagway from 5-7 p.m.

Your registration includes the race, breakfast, dinner, and a shirt . Late registration incurs extra fees.

Good luck to everyone on April 2. To misquote Yoda, I will say: “Ski or ski not. There is no try.”
