While others hunker down against winter’s wrath, the local literary scene is hotter than ever. The winter Writers’ Roundtable organized by the Friends of the Whitehorse Library (FOWL) provides a thorough overview of events for the coming season.

Every Wednesday writers work from noon to 3 p.m. at Bean North Cafe, kilometre 9 on the Takhini Hot Springs Road
First Tuesdays Brave New Words meets from 7 – 11 p.m. at the Woodcutter’s Blanket. This open mic venue is a mixture of music and spoken word as local writers read excepts of their work in a supportive environment.
First Wednesdays Cramped Hand writers meet to spill ink either writing to prompts or working on their own projects in the company of other writers. In Whitehorse we meet at Ste. 1 – 102 Gold Road (in the Industrial Area) from 7-9 p.m. Splinter groups of Cramped Hand also meet in Norway, Germany and online.
Third Saturdays Solstice Haiku poets meet at the Literacy Centre in the Canada Games Centre from 1-3 p.m. to discuss, write and study the modern English form of Japanese poetry.
Third Tuesdays Brave New Writing, as the name suggests, is a writing session where prompts guide participants “to exercise the creative muscle.” Locations vary, but the start time remains 7 p.m.
December
December 3 Mac’s Fireweed Books celebrates Winterval and the Santa Parade with the authors of 2016 from 11-1 p.m.
The next day, December 4, Yukon authors Bob Hayes, Elisabeth Weigand, Kathy Munro and myself have been invited to participate in Christmas at the Bean, a craft fair from 11-5 at Bean North, the little cafe in the woods.
And at Baked Cafe on December 13 from 6-8 p.m. former Yukoner Jerome Stueart is joined by local authors for the launch of his debut science fiction novel The Angels of our Better Beasts.
January
Just in time for tax season, FOWL is hatching a combined live and online workshop with accounting experts specializing in taxes for writers.
February
Poets take up the challenge of NaHaiWriMo to write one haiku per day for the entire month. Inspiration abounds with daily prompts at www.nahaiwrimo.com .
