“Last year there were lineups,” says Amy-Lynn Karchut, Dawson City Music Festival’s producer. “And that is against our mandate; we are not about lineups.”
And so, St. Paul’s Anglican Church will be used by DCMF on a Saturday evening, for the first time, to help take the pressure off the Palace Grand Theatre.
This is the can-do spirit of a largely volunteer-run festival that sees performers apply year after year to attend and accept less money than they normally command.
More volunteers are still needed for this year, she says. Especially for security as audience members are allowed to wander in and out of venues.
Choosing a lineup for this year, Karchut first ruled out those who have appeared at DCMF within five years and then chose acts to support Canadian, emerging performers. But they need to have a following to ensure they will appeal to the audiences here.
The festival kicks off with a concert by The Persuasions, on Thursday night. Then there will be a free kickoff concert at the Gazebo.
The festival runs July 17 to 19.
