Halloween parties for the mature crowd can’t simply offer a feast of candy and chips. We have issues such as cholesterol, blood pressure and the adult palate to keep in mind.

Luckily, there are many healthy party snacks that can be served. Here are some ideas.

For a sophisticated-but-creepy appetizer try black caviar. Grab some shot glasses, fill them up with the caviar. Then, get a package of oval shaped crackers. Cut in half. Take a tube of icing (blood red colour) with a thin tip, write RIP. Stick the cookie on top of the caviar, standing upright. You now have a shot glass filled with dirt and a tombstone.

Jello makes any party more fun. Find some tall blue glasses and skull and bones stickers. Get a mix of yellow and green jello, let it set in the glasses. When ready, take some yellow icing gel, and spread across the top. Stick your skull sticker on the glass. You now have glasses of toxic slime for your guests to savour.

If you are the Martha Stewart type, then owls on toast is for you. Pick up a loaf of sliced pumpernickel bread. Then, get a plantain, smoked salmon cream cheese, almond haves, and a bag of unsalted pretzels. Take the pretzels, place them in your mortar and pestle, and gently crush. Take the plantain, and thinly slice. Get a pan with some olive oil, heat, drop the sliced plantain in. Fry until golden brown. Take the slice of pumpernickel bread. Strategically spread the smoked salmon cream cheese: two circular dollops for the eyes; an oval for the body; half ovals on the side of the body for the wings. Take two plantain chips and place for the eyes. Use the crushed pretzel and place on top of the oval cream cheese for the body. Take the almond haves to place over the wings. Take a small amount of nutella to make the eyeballs. You now have a Halloween owl for a snack.

How about a poisoned apple for your Halloween party? You can make them with Rice Krispies. Follow the same recipe as Rice Krispie squares, but shape in a ball. Add red food colouring. Use a piece of green licorice for the stem. When ready, grab some brown and black icing. Blend to develop a rotten brown colour. Spread over half the apple. Take some oreo cookies, crush them, and lightly sprinkle on the rotten side of your apple.

For another sweet Halloween treat, try frozen yogurt with spiders. Get some chocolate frozen yogurt, scoop one big scoop on a plate. Add a much smaller scoop and attach it to the larger one. Take some long pretzel sticks and place four on each side for the legs. Place two orange jelly beans on the head for eyes. You now have a giant, but not too scary, spider to serve.
