Enjoy two high-class afternoons with the Quest for the Crown Rendezvous Queen candidates
The Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous Quest for the Crown competition features opportunities for us to dress in gold rush era finery and spend a civilized afternoon visiting with the women hoping to be Queen: the Queen’s Tea and Social and the Queen’s Luncheon.
The Queen’s Tea and Social is presented by Westmark Whitehorse and is an afternoon of traditional tea, sandwiches and delicious desserts in the company of Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous Queen contestants on Feb. 18.
The afternoon is a fun-filled family affair.
“Keeping with the style of a high tea afternoon, we will have classical music for the afternoon,” said Heather Anderson, director of the Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous. “For the entertainment, we like to provide a short intermission during the event, and promote some of the local dance artists in the community.”
This year the Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous Air North Can Can dancers perform will perform at the Queen’s Tea and Social and the Queen’s Luncheon. Each Queen candidate will be introduced and join the 2018 Mr. Yukon for a walk through the room to give all the guests an opportunity to see them in their tea dresses.
The young Rendezvous Princes and Princesses who were crowned on Canada Day will be attending the Queen’s Tea and Social this year to host their own Kids’ Tea Time.
“(The Queen’s Tea and Social) has grown over the last few years, and continues to grow, as do all of the Quest for the Crown events,” Anderson said. “This is one of the more popular events, and has sold out the last two years. The support the community shows for the Queen candidates is amazing.”
During the event, Rendezvous has prizes for the Best Dressed Lady and Gentleman, and Young Lady and Young Gentleman. Guests and candidates are also encouraged to get creative and design their very own Tea Hat for the afternoon, with a prize being handed out to the Best Hat of the afternoon.
“Also, don’t forget to pick up a 2018 Quest for the Crown Teacup, each year we are excited to present a new pattern for people to add to their collection,” Anderson said.
The Queen’s Luncheon presented by Yukon College is another event for the Quest for the Crown competition. The evening will have special guests.
“Last year we had the Commissioner of Yukon, Gillian Campbell and a few Yukon elders,” said Marjie Cowell, who volunteers as “Queen Mom”.
This is a great opportunity for the Yukon College Culinary Arts Program students to show off their talents by preparing the meal for attendees.
And, it will be a judged event. “At this event we have some fun with the candidates by asking them impromptu questions without giving them time to prepare an answer; to see how they handle questions on the spot,” Anderson said. “We ask the audience to provide questions, too. This is a fun and interactive event.”
The Queen’s Tea and Social will be held Sunday, February 18 from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Westmark Whitehorse Ballroom.
The Queen’s Luncheon will be held Thursday, February 22 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Yukon College Cafeteria.
