Fit ‘n’ Healthy: The Buff-est in the North

On April 27, women from across Canada will come to Whitehorse to compete in FemSport, an event that sees women competing in a variety of different athletic disciplines, such as a tire pull event and an obstacle course.

Nancy Lockington, owner and manager of FemSport, is bringing the competition back to her hometown.

“FemSport is popular in western Canada’s B.C. and Alberta, so why not bring such an amazing event to the North,” She says. “In addition, as a previous resident of Whitehorse I have a personal connection to the Yukon especially since some of my family still lives there.”

Nancy is expecting about half of her usual maxed-out entries for the Whitehorse competition.

“Since it’s our first time in the Yukon, we don’t expect to reached our usual capped amount of 75 (athletes) but (we) are hoping for approximately 30 to 40 competitors.”

The high-energy competition is open to all women in Canada and the U.S.A. So far, there are entries not only from Whitehorse, but from many parts of western Canada. Jen Hamel is one of those competitors travelling to Whitehorse to compete. She is a past FemSport competitor and is looking forward to her first visit to the Yukon.

“I’ve done Calgary and Edmonton 2012 and will do Whitehorse and Edmonton 2013,” Hamel says. “I’ve never been to the Yukon before and I’ll be travelling with friends so it’s really an experience of a lifetime — plus the chance at placing would be amazing.”

It’s not just the competition that draws Hamel, but even just training for the event pays off.

“When I train for FemSport I feel like a badass,” says Hamel. “I feel strong, powerful and energized. Well I feel dead right after, but after that I feel energized.”

The FemSport competition draws together like-minded women who forge a friendship despite the competition.

This sport is amazing for women,” says Hamel. “We are enriched because of our experiences and although it’s a competition we always cheer for everyone. I love all the ladies that I’ve met competing and training, a real sisterhood.”

If you have any interest in competing you check out the website at www.femsport.tv for more information and to register.

It will be a fun, exciting, supportive weekend for everyone. And if you win you will receive some official gear and trophies from FemSport as well as great prizes from local businesses.

Looking forward to seeing you all there.

FemSport takes place on April 27 at 10:30 a.m. at the Whitehorse Curling Club, located at?1 Sumanik Drive.
