Fit ‘n’ Healthy: Year-to-year Goal-setting

I know it’s only November, but it’s never too soon to start thinking about your goals for 2011. What will you start up in January?

Almost seven years ago, when I decided it was time to change my life, a good friend suggested I try to do something each year that scares year. Just one thing a year. And each year since then I have done just that.

Year one, I trained my tail off, changed my life and entered a body transformation contest. The result? I won a trip to Mexico, my story was published in a magazine, and I had new pride in myself.

Not to mention a new body, lifestyle and outlook on my life. And I met someone who came to be a really great friend and someone who would impact the next six years of my life.

Year two, I entered my first figure competition. I didn’t win – far from it, but I did gain the understanding that I have the power and ability to change my body. I have control over what I eat and I learned how to fit it all in to my already crazy life.

Year three, I started training in dance so I could change to fitness competitions and do a routine on stage. I had absolutely no dance background and no gymnastics background, but I learned that you are never too old to try something new and that I love dance.

I have been in adult hip-hop ever since!

Year four, I competed in the Arnold Classic Amateur fitness competition – the top amateur fitness competition out there. I gained insight into the professional league, networked with some amazing professional competitors and fitness personalities, and gained fitness friends from all over the world.

Year five, I auditioned in Vancouver to be an international fitness presenter. And while this status has not yet officially happened, I learned some incredible things along the way.

The audition taught me that I should really be teaching other fitness professionals more. And it taught me that even though we live in a small town we can do big things.

Since then I have organized and run workshops to certify other fitness professionals. I would never have thought of doing that unless it had been suggested by this audition.

Year six – this year – I entered the Community Cable 9 Video Contest. I was so embarrassed and self-conscious about doing it that I told no one, except my husband. I kept it quiet.

That is, until I won the division for best TV show! Now, I am telling the world.

So now what’s next?! I don’t know!

You never know what is going to come from the things you have tried in the past. All I do know is that sitting around waiting for life to happen does not create your best life.

Stepping out the front door, stepping outside your box, pushing forward and living and trying: this is what it takes to gain confidence, learn and live.

So what are you going to do in 2011?
