Let’s see What’s Up in the gay community. The GALA Pub nights have moved to Foxy’s Cabaret. The first Saturday of every month, between 4 and 8pm, we are gathering with the irrepressible Peggy Hanifan for drinks and music and mingling.
Peggy has been hosting Whitewater Wednesdays for 13 years and is a fixture in Whitehorse’s music community. She is keen to see these monthly GALA gatherings take off with lots of participation from the community.
I attended the first one in the new location of Foxy’s and although the turnout was not huge we still had a lot of fun. I think the straight people outnumbered the gays, which was kind of cool.
It is an open mic event where, if you are so inclined, you can get up and sing or play an instrument or highland dance. If you feel the need, Peggy will let you express yourself however you wish (within limits).
For those that are new or have never attended any GALA gathering, going can be a daunting prospect especially if you have to go alone. I know this can be a reason that new people don’t show up.
If you are one of these people rest assured that if you show up you will be welcomed and included and you will meet new people, we are a friendly inclusive group. If you really have a hard time going alone you can always contact me via email and I will be happy to meet up with you. I have met a number of people in the past and gone with them to these events.
With winter looming I am planning on getting some more events happening. The dyke nights I have arranged have been very well attended so we will do more of those, and if you happen to be a dude we don’t mind if you show up too.
In the past we did a couple of pub nights. The first one saw about six women show, the second one had a bigger showing with about fifteen women.
We also did a bowling night that was very well attended with about twenty women and two men participating.
If there are any ideas out there about events people would like to see they can always email me as well and we can brainstorm ideas.
As a group there are any number of things we can plan. Being the nerd that I am I would be interested in a gay writing group or a gay book club. It would be fun for everyone to submit a book that they are interested in. It might also be interesting to include some books by queer authors like David Sedaris or Sara Waters.
If you are an outdoor enthusiast you might want to get a skiing group together. Whatever your interests, throw them out there and see what happens.
I hope this winter will see a resurgence in participation in the gay community. The community is only as vibrant as its participants.
