Getting Ready to ‘Shine’ in ‘O9

Honouring National Aboriginal Day and summer solstice, APTN’s much-heralded live event will take place on dual stages, combining for an extended three-and-a-half hours of national, live telecast from Whitehorse, Yukon and from Winnipeg, Manitoba on Saturday, June 20.

The theme of Aboriginal Day Live ’09 is “Shine”. This event sheds light on the pride and identity of Aboriginal People throughout Canada and is a day to celebrate the light in every province and in every heart. It is truly a time to Shine.

This year’s show will feature an evening of music, entertainment, comedy and traditional dance with many talented Aboriginal artists and performers gracing both stages. Past performers will be part of the celebration, as will a whole new and extraordinary lineup of stars.

The entire broadcast will close with an amazing display of fireworks from the Winnipeg stage, making this a must-see event for the entire family.

Aboriginal Day Live ’09 is APTN’s third annual live celebration marking National Aboriginal Day. Proclaimed by the Governor General of Canada, on June 13, 1996, National Aboriginal Day celebrates the rich diversity and culture of this country’s First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. The day falls annually at the time of summer solstice, normally on June 21 (on non-leap years).

As Canada’s only Aboriginal television network, APTN has committed to making National Aboriginal Day celebrations bigger and better each year.

By bringing the talents of Aboriginal People to the national stage and by committing three-and-a-half hours of live, commercial-free broadcast time, APTN gives all Canadians the opportunity to share in this very special day.

For viewers in the host cities, celebrations are as close as Shipyards Park (Whitehorse) and The Forks (Winnipeg). The event is free to attend and the public is encouraged to bring lawn chairs and be part of the live show.

In Whitehorse, the show begins at 6 p.m. local time and runs until 9:30 p.m. Many events will be taking place at the site, over the course of the weekend, and APTN is proud to be part of the festivities.

Be sure to mark this spectacular event on your calendar and watch this column space in the coming weeks as we release more information about the talent that will perform during the show.
