Ginny’s ‘Boys’ – the k9 ones!

Ginny and her husband, Grant, are in their mid to late sixties and have three adult sons – Danny, Kevin and Sean. Acquiring anything new, let alone two puppies requiring toilet and other training, was not something many couples in their age category were signing up for.

Charlie Bear the corgi

Happy birthday, Charlie Bear!

Clearly, Charlie Bear is family and was from the moment Morgan met her. Along with Lambert, the family of three shared some very special years together. *When Lambert took ill, and then died in 2018, Charlie Bear took on an even more meaningful role.

Immigrating with one’s dog

Many of us experience the urge to settle down once we start planning a family, land our first serious job, or perhaps after traveling the world a bit. For Chica Mishima (pronounced “Cheeca”), it was the acquisition of a four kilogram lap dog that caused her to do an about-turn, apply for Canadian Citizenship and move to the Yukon with said k9 sidekick.

Not the basil you want, the Basil you need

Pets have always been an essential part of Peter Heebink’s life. Peter had been grieving his last dog, Oliver, and was not sure how he would replace his beloved companion. Then, one day, he needed some basil, so he grabbed $50 and jumped into his car to visit the Fireweed Community Market.

A proud new ‘mom’

At 16, Sienne Secord is one of the youngest, but also one of the most responsible dog owners I’ve had the pleasure of interviewing.

Graydon & Bandit: Inseparable Buds

There was Bandit proudly riding shotgun in Graydon’s little Toyota truck. You could tell right away they were besties. Chums, compadres, mates, or even confidants (dogs are such good listeners).

Pet Project

A little hard work never hurt anyone” reads the sign on the prominent gate that all visitors drive under on their way up to Yvette and Hank’s farm, outside of Whitehorse.

Cathy takes a ‘Chance’ (and finds love)

Horses … Many a little girl reveries in the companionship of this uniquely large pet that often towers over its owner, weighing in at over 1,000 pounds (draft horses upwards of 2,000 pounds!). Not many of us make reality of our childhood fantasies.

Dogs for a Northern Trapper

I’ve always been a little in awe of those who work with their K-9 best friends; it seems to me they have a deep bond with their animals, and their dogs enjoy a sense of purpose beyond measure.

Jolly Saint Nick and Harley Davidson

We live in a territory seemingly dominated by huskies, both in numbers and in our image of the quintessential Yukon dog (the strong malamute even takes center stage on our Coat of Arms and flag!)

Amica & Kodi

“I always wanted to get a dog, ever since I was knee high to a grasshopper,” Amica Sturdy explained. Despite her desire, she waited patiently for the right, and responsible, moment to welcome a dog into her life.

Chico joins the family

Minus 30, with cabin fever sinking in, is not the ideal environment to bring a new puppy home to. Add to this, the fact that we are notoriously cluttered and already owned a dog, a cat, and eight chickens, and some would say we were setting up for disaster.
