Beaded Gemstone Pin with Karra MacIntosh

Beaded Gemstone Pin with Karra MacIntosh

Karra MacIntosh is from the Wolf Clan and is a citizen of Kwanlin Dun First Nation located in Whitehorse, Yukon. She descends from Northern and Southern Tutchone people.
At 16, Karra moved to British Columbia and resided in several places. After a few years South, Karra longed to move North to reconnect with her Yukon family and to learn more about her culture which sparked her curiosity in native cultural arts.
Karra’s interest in art began with a present in the form of a canvas, paints, and sketch books. On blank canvases using acrylics, Karra would paint fairies, goddesses, and flowers which she affectionately calls “hippie art.” She also painted landscape scenes that she captured through the lens of her camera.
In grade 5 at Selkirk Elementary School, Karra made a pair of duffle slippers. Many years later, Karra learned how to do beadwork from her friends.
Karra further enhanced her skills in native cultural arts by completing the six introductory art courses in the Yukon First Nations Art Program at the Kwanlin Dun House of Learning. The hands-on instruction and step-by-step process followed to complete each art project was enjoyable, challenging and engaging. Karra enjoyed the basic introduction to beadwork, sewing, traditional footwear, fine craftwork, and drawing and carving.
Karra loves the outdoors and enjoys camping, kayaking, and running. Strengthening her spirituality, being creative, promoting love and compassion for humanity, and staying connected to mother earth is important to Karra. Being back in her traditional territory is a grounding experience for her.
