From the Yukon to the Tar Pits: A 3-Part Ice Age Journey

April 21 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm MST

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every week that begins at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, repeating until 28 April 2021

What does a museum in Yukon, Canada, and another in Los Angeles, California have in common? The Yukon Beringia Interpretive Centre and the La Brea Tar Pits span over 4,309 km, but the distance doesn’t matter when we are talking about the Ice Age. What we might see in the tar pits of LA may have also roamed the mammoth steppe grasslands of the Yukon!
Join us on a 3 part journey to explore the treasures of the vanished world of Ice Age giants and the science of how these treasures connect to our understanding of past ecosystems, current issues of climate change, and all the questions we are still trying to answer.
This online webinar series has been designed in partnership with the La Brea Tar Pits for all ages, and is suitable for students in grades 6 to 12.
Each week is a different topic featuring scientists from both locations. Learn about each episode below.
April 14 at 1pm : Bridging the Ice Age Gap with Elizabeth Hall and Laura Tewksbury
The distance between Whitehorse, Yukon, and Los Angeles, California is several days of driving or several plane rides, but Ice Age animals made the journey on foot. We will learn more about what makes these sites unique and the giant beasts that we find in both Los Angeles and in the Yukon.
April 21 at 1pm : Dig Your Way into the Ice Age with Dr. Grant Zazula and Dr. Regan Dunn
What have we learned about the Ice Age from over 100 years of digging? We will explore what scientist learn from the ice age and how we use this knowledge to better understand current climate change.
April 28 at 1pm : Bridging the Ice Age Gap with Dr. Grant Zazula and Dr. Mairin Balisi
Uncovering the mysteries of the ice age is what paleontologists do. Whether it’s uncovering fossils in the Klondike muck or excavating in the Tar Pits. We will explore how scientists study the fossils found at each site and what questions we’re still asking about the ice age.
