Introduction to Tlingit Hand Poke Tattoo with Anne Spice

This workshop is an introduction to Tlingit hand poke tattooing. We will begin by learning some of the history and ancestral practice of Indigenous tattooing, and will discuss its current revival. The workshop will cover the process of designing and completing a hand poked tattoo, the supplies needed, cultural practice and ethics (including avoiding cultural appropriation), and basic technique. Participants are invited to sign up in pairs*. Members of each pair will learn by tattooing each other with a simple “earth line” around their wrist (or another simple alternative).
Anne Spice is inland Tlingit, a member of Kwanlin Dun First Nation. She grew up in Southern Alberta in the territories of the Niitsitapi, Nakoda, and Tsuut’ina, and is excited to return to her ancestral homelands for this residency. She is an anti-colonial organizer, land defender, educator and poet. Anne is a hand-poked tattoo artist, and her tattoo practice was learned on the Indigenous frontlines, where she tattooed land defenders, friends, and herself. Anne is passionate about reclaiming Indigenous tattooing, including the revival of tattooing as a ceremonial practice and one that builds reciprocity and relation in community. She lives in Tkaronto, where she is a professor of Indigenous environmental knowledges in the department of geography and environmental studies at Toronto Metropolitan University.
