St. Savior’s Anglican Church in Carcross

Sunday Service

The church was formed in 1901 by the Bishop Bompas, who had been living at Fortymile, downriver from Dawson, Yukon prior to the Klondike Gold Rush. He decided to head south on missionary work and came to the town of Carcross, which was originally known as Caribou Crossing at the time. According to Mrs. Bompas’ reports, the only inhabitants of the town were a couple of Canadian Mounties, the owner of the local hotel, the stationmaster for the White Pass Railroad, and two or three native people.

The couple set up shop in a vacant building on the south side of the narrows (they were in their 70s at this point). For a time, church services were held in a tent near the train depot but because of extremely cold weather, they eventually moved to a mission house. A mission school was built in 1903 and established on the north side of the water, attended by the native children. In 1904, Bompas traded buildings with the North West Mounted Police, which brought the school over to the south side to give the Mounties a post on the north side close to the main part of town. The church was built this same year (1904), with monies raised by Mrs. Bompas on a trip to eastern Canada.

In 1917, White Pass agreed to transfer the title to Lot 2, where the church now stands, over to the church and on July 30, 1917, the building was floated across the water using timber frames.

After the church was moved, a chancel and a vestry were added and some additional work has been done over the years.

The church still holds services starting at 11 a.m. every first and third Sunday. The Rev. David Pritchard is the priest in charge.
