Yukon Learn – PGI Golf Tournament for Literacy

The first PGI, or Peter Gzowski Invitational Golf Tournament for Literacy, took place in 1986 with a commitment from the former CBC broadcaster and journalist to someday raise $1 million across Canada for literacy programs. This goal was quickly achieved, and exceeded, through overwhelming support from every province and territory.

For the past three decades the Yukon Learn Society has hosted the annual PGI golf tournament. During that time, generous Yukon businesses, organizations and individuals have sponsored the event to help raise over $800,000. All of these funds are invested in free literacy programs across the Yukon, resulting in improved service and access to education for everyone.

Since Peter Gzowski’s passing in 2002, the Peter Gzowski Foundation for Literacy (PGFL) has evolved and adapted to the ever-growing need for literacy programs. In 2022 the PGFL decided that the Foundation’s endowment could better address the literacy challenge through granting direct financial support to literacy organizations instead of organizing nationwide fundraising events. This decision sunsets the national support for the Peter Gzowski Invitational golf tournaments across the country.

In response, the Yukon Learn Society, with the support of PGFL, has decided to continue hosting the annual golf tournament, as it has been greatly effective at raising literacy funds over the years. As of this year, the fundraising event will be known as the Play Golf Invitational, or PGI. We believe this will continue the tradition of honouring Peter Gzowski and his legacy of supporting literacy.
