AWG 2020 Cultural Marketplace calls for artists

The marketplace will display and sell works from Yukon artisans from March 16 to 21 at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre

The Whitehorse 2020 Arctic Winter Games, in partnership with the Yukon First Nations Culture and Tourism Association (YFNCT) and presented by Finning, is inviting Yukon visual artists and craftspeople to apply for the AWG 2020 Cultural Marketplace hosted at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre from March 16 to 21. The marketplace will showcase Yukon’s wide range of visual artists, both Indigenous and non-Indigenous, as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Arctic Winter Games.

Artists will provide their works to the marketplace in advance and the pieces will be professionally displayed by a curator and sold in a 2,000 square foot gallery space. All pieces are being cared for and sold by the gallery team.

“Yukon offers such a diverse array of skilled artists,” said Courtney Holmes, YFNCT’s arts program coordinator. “The AWG Cultural Marketplace will showcase the talent and unique perspective of the territory’s visual culture. It’s a great opportunity to not only sell work but to share Yukon stories with other circumpolar nations.”

Artists selected for the Cultural Marketplace will be invited to Whitehorse to participate in creative programming designed specifically for their benefit and enjoyment. Organizers anticipate a strong contingent of artists from Yukon communities and are encouraging them to apply.

“This is more than a commercial opportunity for Yukon artists,“ explained Holmes. “We’re bringing together creatives from across the territory to meet, share a special experience and forge relationships with one another.”

Deadline for applications is Friday, Feb. 7, 2020 and artists can expect to receive a response from the committee by Friday, Feb. 14. Applications in English and French can be found online at www.awg2020.org/culture. For any questions, contact the marketplace coordinator, Courtney Holmes via email at [email protected] or phone (867) 667-7698 ext 204.
