The first day of school is always fun at my house. We get up at 7 a.m. and have breakfast. Next we have bible time and go downstairs to the schoolroom where my mom gives us our school books, plus pencils, erasers, markers, etc. and tells us what to do. We sometimes get a little candy, too!

Our first day of school takes a little longer than normal because we have to get used to everything at first. This year the first day is special because one of my younger siblings, Matilda, is going into first grade.

What my mom does is she makes a big cone called a school cone, which is a German tradition. The school cone is made with cardboard, covered with fabric and filled with candy, school stuff, and little toys. The new school kid gets their photo taken with the cone. Everybody in Germany gets a cone on their first day of school. Us older kids returning to school get small cones.

I am also really looking forward to the activities we do with the Yukon Home Education Society (YHES) that will start up again for the school year. We do skating and swimming, and the Artist in the School Program, and other things that are more fun to do with more kids.

I like homeschooling because I can take a break every now and then and go outside a little or just do something different in between if my mom allows it.

Homeschooling is fun and you learn a lot more stuff than in regular school because your parents can help you more with your schoolwork. My mom also teaches us other stuff: “learning for life,” as my mom calls it. I have already learned how to cook and bake different dishes, take care of animals, how to crochet, and other things that may come in useful in the future.

I am excited to see what else I will learn this year. I love music, and my piano and harp lessons will start back up as soon as school starts, which I am looking forward to a lot. I really hope that my mom will start doing voice lessons with me this year.

I enjoy being homeschooled and hope to be able to do it with my kids one day, too!
