What it means to be Canadian – by Pam van Kampen

Following is a Lyric, Free Verse, Poem:

The Canada man sat opposite me

I, all nervous and prepared

And when his judgment came to be

These were the learned words he bared

The most important thing

Is that you were born

Thirty years have passed since then

A wedlock with but few complaints

I’ve tried to adapt wherever I can

In every which way, I’ve only gained

The most important thing

Is that you were born

For some it’s the beaver, for some the bear

Maple Syrup, Grey Cup or Tim Hortons

It’s all that too, but for me I’ll share

Canada granted me the gift of acceptance

The most important thing

Is that you were born

In the bosom of Canada I’ve learned to respect

Each person’s uniqueness and contribution

I’m privileged to be a citizen, in fact

Thrilled to celebrate its 150 year constitution

The most important thing

Is that you were born
