Rosemary grilled herring

Grilled whole fish are easy and delicious and a great break from the classic hotdogs and burgers. Herring are an inexpensive fish, making them a great place to start if you’ve never grilled fish before. They’re also small and easy to maneuver around a grill. Some people find these fish a bit fatty, but coating them with lemon and rosemary cuts through those flavors.  


  • 8 whole herring, gutted
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/2 tsp dried rosemary
  • Pinch red pepper flakes
  • Juice of 1/2 lemon
  • Salt and pepper, to taste


  1. Toss herring with olive oil, dried rosemary, red pepper flakes, lemon juice and salt and pepper. Cover and refrigerate for 20 minutes while you heat the grill.
  2. Heat grill to high heat. Place the herring on the grill and cook for 3 minutes. Flip, then cook for an additional 3 minutes. Remove fromt he grill and serve drizzled with lemon juice and olive oil.


When seasoning whole fish make sure to season inside the body cavity as well
