If you are from the 1930s and ‘40s, you may still long for those old-fashioned baked breads of all different tastes. You will also know what was in them and, to me, that is what is most important.

Remember, those were the days when a man was sure, when walking down the street, that the woman walking with him was on the inside of the sidewalk (otherwise it was like advertising that the lady was “for sale”).

To honour the lady folks, men always opened the door for them and never walked into a building ahead of them. To truly show respect for the women folk, we men never wore a hat in a building where there were ladies. Sadly, how times have changed.

Well, not for me … It makes me feel good practising those old-fashioned ideas.


I love OLD-FASHIONED DATE LOAF
Ingredients:

1 lb chopped dates

1 cup chopped walnuts

A little mixed peel

½ cup sugar

2-1/2 cups flour

11 tsp vanilla

1 tsp soda in a little water

Lemon extract

1 cup butter

3 eggs

Method:

Mix and bake in a loaf pan for about 1 hour at 350℉.


Today I baked Old-FASHIONED BANANA NUT BREAD
Ingredients:

1/2 cup shortening

1 cup white sugar

1 tsp salt

1 tsp soda

2 cups flour

½ cup walnuts

1 egg

2 mashed bananas

Method:

Mix and pour into a greased loaf pan. Bake in a slow oven for 1 hour.


OLD-FASHIONED CRANBERRY BREAD
Ingredients:

2 cups flour

1 cup sugar

1 1/2 tsp baking powder

½ tsp soda

¾ cup orange juice

1 Tbsp grated rind

1 egg

2 cups chopped cranberries

½ cup shortening

Salt to taste

Method:

Sift the dry ingredients. Cut in shortening. Combine juice, rind and egg. Pour into the flour mixture and mix enough to just dampen. Carefully fold in the nuts and berries. Spoon into the greased loaf pan and spread corners higher than the center.

Bake at 360℉ for 1 hour. Remove from the pan and cool. Store 24 hours before cutting.


FROM THE ‘40s: OLD-FASHIONED WALNUT BREAD
Ingredients:

3 cups sifted white flour

4 tsp baking powder

1 lightly beaten egg

1 1/2 cup milk

1 1/2 cup chopped walnuts

1 cup white sugar

1 tsp salt

¼ cup melted shortening

1 tsp vanilla

Method:

Sift flour with sugar, baking powder and salt. Add egg, shortening, milk and vanilla to dry mixture. Stir just until all flour is moistened. Add walnuts. Turn batter into greased 9x3x5 loaf pan. Bake at 350℉ for about 1 hour and 20 minutes.
