There are exciting developments in the Yukon horse community.
At the last meeting of the Yukon Horse and Rider Association, I learned of an exciting event happening this month. Well at least I think it is exciting, you will have to decide for yourself.
It was announced that the current YHRA executive has decided to undertake the challenge of laying the ground work to establish an Equine Sport Governing Body in the Yukon.
Now, before I go any further, let me make it perfectly clear that the Yukon Horse and Rider Association is not (I repeat, not) going to become said governing body. The YHRA will remain the same as it is now.
The current YHRA executive is simply leading the charge so to speak, in researching and establishing this new, separate organization.
I myself had no idea what the role of a Sport Governing Body was until recently. As I understand it, the establishment of an Equine SGB would open a number of new opportunities for Yukoners who are involved with horses.
The SGB would be in charge of developing local judges and officials. It could also establish funding that would assist riders and their horses to travel to competitions and clinics outside of the Yukon.
Now I know there is more then that but I’m afraid that in my excitement I neglected to take notes. What can I say, I was being distracted by my imagination, which was focusing on all the learning opportunities that this could open up for Yukon youth.
The YHRA will be presenting a short information presentation before its next regular monthly meeting in order to answer any questions that might arise.
I have been given leave to extend a formal invitation to anyone wishing to know more or who might be interested in getting involved with the set up of the ESGB, to come to the meeting being held at the Sport Yukon Building on Feb. 19 from 7 to 7:30 p.m.
I hope to see you there.
