Fit ‘n’ Healthy: What Does it Take to be The Fittest?

Who are the most “fit” athletes in the world?

This is a loaded question and one that deserves a lot of thought.

First, you need to determine what “fit” means to you and this is extremely subjective.

Healthy body fat percentage, grace, explosiveness, strength, endurance, flexibility, mental ability, nutritional habits, speed, co-ordination, core strength, etc.

To determine which sports require the most fit athletes, take a look at the athlete and then at the “X” that indicates each criterion needed.

For me, I think it’s going to take a combination of all the attributes to come up with the “ideal” athlete.

As I was going through this process, I realized that it’s going to take a chart to organize all this information.

For each sport, I am going to assume all athletes are at the top of their game, pre-competition. An “X” means that this is true for this type of athlete, a blank means it’s not true and a “?” means it could go either way.

And, in case you are wondering, I did have bodybuilders on the list at first, but I ended up taking them off because pre-competition, in all honesty, they don’t have a lot of these traits … even strength.

In turn, I also ended up taking out “nutritional habits” as one of the criteria because, truly, bodybuilding is the only one that you cannot succeed at with any slip of the diet plan. Any of the other athletes could have a drink every once and a while through their training regime and still succeed, but they all would do better the more strict their nutrition leading up to and prior to their competitions.

Based on the following criteria I concluded that the decathlon — a composite contest consisting

of a 100-metre run, a broad jump, putting the shot, a running

high-jump, a 400-metre run, throwing the discus, a 100-metre hurdle race, pole vaulting, throwing the javelin and a

1500-metre run – requires the most well-rounded, most fit athletes.

They are the only ones who need all of the attributed in order to compete at their best.

In the end, this seemed like the obvious answer, but it was a fun exercise.
