Fit ‘n’ Healthy: Just Do It

It’s five months into 2012 and what have you done this year?

Have you tried something new? Have you learned anything? Have you done something that scares you? Have you done something to help you live, not just exist?

As I am sure you have all heard by now, Lee and I sold Peak Fitness.

We have been running the facility for our entire adult lives, and though we have loved it, we knew that it was time for us to grow and move on with other things.

They may not be bigger, they may not seem better, but they are what we believe will help us live more.

It will give us more time to spend with our children and each other. It will give us the freedom of time, which over the years and loss of loved ones, has become priceless.

It was extremely scary, the unknown always is, but it is the next phase of our lives and in the fear is also excitement.

Now, I am not telling you that you need to quit your job or move halfway across the world to do something new or something that scares you.

How many times have you watched TV, or seen pictures of a friend doing something, and said, “Man that looks cool, l’d love to try that.”

I am betting more than once.

When my daughter was around five years old, we talked about wanting to surf.

This year, we did! We took a surfing camp together in California. For five days it was just the two of us on a beach, soaking up the waves, the sun and the surf.

The night before the first day of camp, my daughter Ivory turned to me and said, “Mum, are you nervous?”

Heck, yes I was.

Then we laughed it off, talked about what our fears were and how awesome it was going to be.

Like most of us, the fear was fitting in. Seems like such a silly thing, fitting in.

Will we be dressed the same? Will we be the same age? Do I wear my water shoes or my sandals?

It’s so silly.

Within the first half hour we were on the water and focused on ourselves. Within an hour we caught our first wave and the rest didn’t matter—just lots of laughs, sunshine and memories. It was totally worth it.

Your “new” could be something as simple as painting your room a new color, building a project, learning to sew, learning to paint, changing your workout regime, learning a new sport, etc.

Or, it could be something huge like traveling to a place you’ve always wanted to go, changing professions, going back to school, or moving closer to loved ones.

By the end of 2012, you need to try something new and or do something that scares you. No matter what the outcome, it will be worth it.

Remember, today is a gift. Be present.
