Fit ‘n’ Healthy: Roadblocks Are No Obstacle for This Trainer

One thing I talk to all of my clients about, when they are first starting on their fitness journey, is goal setting. And with goal setting, we always talk about roadblocks along the way.

No matter how much planning we do, there will always be something or someone who steps in our way.

I have a huge goal with a very particular end date.

On March 4, I will stand onstage in front of hundreds, perform a fitness routine and be judged on my physique, strength, power, flexibility and performance quality.

That is one huge deadline.

There’s no pushing it away or asking for an extension. There’s no covering up my “trouble spots” or making do.

Because of this deadline and the amount of work and time I have to put into being ready, I have to plan every single day. If you look at my calendar you will see that each minute of my day is planned.

I plan times to do both of my cardio sessions, times to eat, times for clients, times for my family, times for my strength workout – heck, I might as well plan time to pee. But I am proof that no matter how much you plan each and every day, something will inevitably come up and block your road to success.

I am no different than each of you: I have kids, a business, responsibility, feelings of guilt, clients who need my time, friends who seek my time, a trainer who requires my full attention and discipline.

I question my decisions and wonder if what I have chosen to do is too selfish. My goal in life seems to be to make everyone around me happy. These are all things I have to deal with, all while still aiming to reach my goal.

I have seen my fair share of roadblocks during this process.

I crave sweets; I had a birthday in February for which I was not given a free meal; I went through Valentine’s day without chocolate and with a husband who was struggling to find a way to show his love without food.

I go through PMS just like any other girl; I have financial problems that are cause for stress; I have been sick; I have had sick kids that make me miss workouts; I have had to book flights and change flights that have taken too much time to plan; I have had clients not show up for sessions, along with clients begging to get in for more sessions.

I even have a passport issue that almost caused me to quit.

I have missed and needed my Mom, which made me break down in the middle of a cardio session. I have had to deal with my Dad’s estate. I have worked to keep my siblings happy. And guess what, I have even cheated when I shouldn’t have (once or twice. Just don’t tell my trainer).

I have barriers, just like anyone else, and all of these barriers take time away from reaching my goal.

I do not live in a bubble. I am just like you.

I do not believe it is willpower that makes me different. I believe it is a level of how important the goal is to me. I truly want to do this. I truly want to succeed. I was brought up to never quit once I started something, to put my all into something I have started to do.

If you tell someone, including yourself, that you are going to do something, you do it.

I do not let myself down.

Now, it is true that sometimes this gets me into situations that are stressful and sometimes I may be taken advantage of, but in the end it makes me proud of who I am and increases my self-esteem like nothing else.

On March 4, I will be on the stage at the 2009 Arnold Classic and you can know that I will do my best to make all of you proud. Hopefully, along the way I have motivated one of you to change your life for the better, stick to your goals and make yourself proud of who you are.

I am with you all the way.

XOXO.
