The tennis season in the Yukon is too short … so it has moved indoors.
To help get the word out, Tennis Yukon is holding the 40 Below Indoor Tennis Tournament at Yukon College March 1 and 2.
Low compression balls will be used for the adults to compensate for the floor and the children will have mini-tennis courts.
“Progressive tennis,” Tennis Yukon vice president Kyle Marchuk clarifies.
“Mini-tennis is how we teach young people to play,” adds president Stacy Lewis.
“They don’t play with a regular tennis ball, either,” says Marchuk. “It’s the size of a grapefruit.”
There are lessons from 4 to 8 p.m. on Sundays at the college and drop-ins will begin on Wednesdays, from 6 to 8 p.m., in April and May.
Lewis says a Level 2 coach will be brought up in June to teach at a tennis camp and an instructor’s course.
Lewis and Marchuk, along with Leighann Chalykoff, are getting help with Tennis Canada’s Building Tennis Communities program and its $2,000 grant.
Information on the tournament is available from Marchuk at [email protected].
