A new Star Wars fan favours Darth Maul

The Star Wars franchise really needs no introduction. Created by George Lucas, the first film was released in 1977 and has generated a very loyal and growing fan base. Nine films later, plus two anthology films, and you could say that Star Wars is one of the longest-running and most-successful franchises out there. In addition to all of the movies, there is even a dedicated day for Star Wars franchise: May 4th (“May the 4th be with you!”).

But what about those who are not familiar with the story? Well, I happened to fall into that category—but I am not completely aloof. I am aware of most of the characters and have a general idea of what Star Wars is all about. Mostly because I have seen all the fan gear, in stores and commercials, with the characters. I suppose the reason I never became fully interested in Star Wars is because the first few films came out before I was born. Also, the people in my family were more into James Bond, Jurassic Park and Batman; so, growing up, I did not know too much about Star Wars. In fact, my earliest memory of Star Wars is when The Phantom Menace was released in 1999. But I did not watch it because I was more interested in The Mummy, which came out around the same time. I did finally get around to watching The Phantom Menace, about a month ago.

Star Wars does have an impressive list of characters. For all of the good characters, there are as many evil ones. My favourite character is the psychologically disturbed Sith Lord, Darth Maul. His first appearance is in The Phantom Menace, where he causes all sorts of havoc.

The first thing I was drawn to was his face. He looks really badass, with the black designs placed on his blood-red face. Then there are the little horns coming out of the sides of his head, which make him look even more sinister.

Aside from the cool way Darth Maul looks, I really admire his determination. I won’t go into great detail, as I don’t want to give away too many spoilers for those who have never seen Star Wars. Let’s just say that Darth Maul is one of those characters who is always scheming. He finds himself getting betrayed, a few times, which drives him mad with rage, and consumed with getting revenge on his enemies. I also feel that the evil Darth Sideous played a huge part in causing most of Darth Maul’s strife. If Darth Sideous never kidnapped Darth Maul from his family, I feel he would have had a much more peaceful life, possibly. I suppose he could have decided to go on a quest for galactic domination, and rival Darth Sideous, but that’s a different conversation.

What also amazes me about Darth Maul is how resourceful he is. He reinvented the famous Star Wars lightsaber by wielding two saber handles together, to create a double-edged saber. Also, when Darth Maul was cut in half by Obi Wan Kenobi, he survived! His body parts were cast down a deep shaft, with his upper torso being carted away to a planet that is essentially a junkyard. While focusing on his hatred for Obi, he was able to channel the dark forces and survive by using metal trash to create spider-like legs that attached to his body. From there, he went on a continuous quest to try and destroy Obi.

Even though Darth Maul is considered to be one of the bad guys in Star Wars, he will always be my favourite. Although Yoda would be a close second, because his voice and wisdom are priceless. But I suspect that Yoda would not be so welcoming to those who cheer on a dark Sith Lord, even if the Sith Lord is more intelligent than him (insert slick smile here).
