Ellorie McKnight, Sarah Hamilton and Ryan McNally at the Front Street Gazebo
Most Fridays this summer, whether there is rain or shine, it will be concert time at noon at the Front Street Gazebo. The first of these events, organized by the Klondike Visitors Association, kicked off in spite of a very light sprinkling of rain, on June 4.Featured performers for the first event were the Fiddle Club. While some locals were fooled into thinking this might be youngsters from the Dawson’s Youth Fiddlers, who can sometimes be found busking around town in the summer, this was a trio from Whitehorse,Ryan McNally, Sarah Hamilton and Ellorie McKnight delighted an audience that grew to about 50 over the hour with a mixture of country and traditional instrumental tunes and songs, featuring the three of them interchangeably on fiddles, guitar, double bass and vocals. As noted in his introduction to the band, the KVA’s Andy Cunningham said,“Fiddle Club isn’t a club, it’s a band… of fiddle nerds. Fiddle Club just had a better ring to it! Sarah Hamilton is Artistic Director of the Fiddleheads and also released an amazing old time & western swing solo album.“Ellorie McKnight’s fiddle playing and angelic voice is probably one of the Yukon’s best kept secrets. She’s also a scientist.“They are joined by some guy named Ryan who seems unable to put an instrument down even though he doesn’t know how to play it.”This free event was broadcast remotely over CYFT-fm, and recorded for what may be a later broadcast. The summer long event is being sponsored by the City of Dawson, the KVA, Diamond Tooth Gerties, KIAC, DCMF, the Yukon Government, and Parks Canada. The Artist Line Up for the summer will be: June 11- Joey O’Neil: June 18- Whoa! Bear; June 25- Gordie Tentrees; July 2- The Lucky Ones; July 9- Sophie Noel; July 23- Ryan McNally; July 30- Megan Abel; August 6 – Hammondhoffer; August 20- Paris Pick; August 27- Evrytt Willow. There will be not be concerts on July 16 or August 13.Cunningham noted that if it rained too hard an alternate location would be found and people would be alerted on Facebook. Some of these acts will also play sets at Diamond Tooth Gerties. Fiddle Club had a two hour gig there on June 3.
