The crew at Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous will kick the season off, and heels up, at the Rendezvous Kick Off

The countdown is almost over, with only days left until the official Rendezvous Kick Off, presented by the Hougen Group of Companies. This year’s Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous (YSR) event is bigger and better than ever. A giant celebration will announce the official start of the festival.

“We wanted to try something new this year and showcase everyone’s favourite YSR characters from the get-go. The event also provides a unique opportunity for all our generous volunteers to come together in a social environment before the craziness of the festival begins,” said Kate Davidson, coordinator of the event and member of the YSR board of directors.

Unlike previous years, the new Rendezvous Kick Off also allows for a greater variety of entertainment to be on display in a single event. It may be the only time where you get to see all your favourite YSR characters under the one roof. The Snowshoe Shufflers will show off their incredible moves and the Sourdough Sam contestants will bring all their charm. Don’t forget your garter at home folks, or the Keystone Kops may just put you in jail!

Of course it wouldn’t be a Rendezvous event without royalty so, keep an eye out for the 2018 Rendezvous Queen, flanked by her Company of the White Wolf Royal Guard, as well as our 2019 Quest for the Crown candidates.

Finally, in keeping with tradition, we promise there will be even more high kicks than ever before. The YSR Air North Can-Can line will be performing their entire 2019 programme. For the first time in Rendezvous history, we have partnered with the Northern Lights School of Dance to bring you the inaugural YSR Junior Can-Can line. Be prepared to see them out and about this festival season alongside the YSR Air North Can-Can line.

“YSR is very excited to have our first ever junior can-can Line,” said “Calamity Kate” Davidson, a four-year veteran of the line. “When Christina from NLSD offered to sponsor and choreograph a junior can-can line, we thought it was a great opportunity for youth to be able to participate in a longtime Rendezvous tradition, the can-can. They will be performing at most of YSR’s daytime events and evening ticketed shows, along with making appearances on the main performance stage over the weekend. They will also be doing the school performances this year.”

Like previous years, tickets to all Rendezvous events will be available on the night at a special price. The 2019 event tickets went on sale in early December with early bird pricing. The Sourdough Rendezvous Society decided to extend the early bird pricing, so the Rendezvous Kick Off is your final chance to snap up tickets at the early bird price.

The Rendezvous Kick Off is on Friday, Feb. 8 at the Westmark Ballroom. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Entry is by donation.

For all our 2019 volunteers, and anyone still interested in volunteering, we are hosting a volunteer meet-and-greet before the kick off, so come down to the Westmark Whitehorse at 5 p.m. This will be a great opportunity to connect with your fellow volunteers and to learn about what it means to be a Rendezvous volunteer.
