Midnight Sun First Annual Ladies Disc Golf Tournament

This is a feel-good story about local women supporting other women and breaking down barriers. We are holding the inaugural Midnight Sun Ladies Disc Golf Tournament and wanted to find a way to reach out to women who are facing too many barriers to participate in disc golf or in other forms of recreation.

Breaking Barriers & Creating Safe Spaces

Challenge Accepted! We created a low-barrier event, thanks to the Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) Diversity and Outreach Grant Program:

  • $25 fee with proceeds going to Yukon Aboriginal Women’s Council (YAWC)
  • Free new gear to get everyone started (2 discs, mini towel and more)
  • Amenities: coffee, snacks, water and porta potties
  • Free Skills Clinic, with a professional female disc golfer (mandatory for new players)
  • Entry into our putting challenge draw, which features a variety of donated items valued at more than $50
  • If you have specific needs in order to be able to attend, please contact [email protected]

We decided to make the tournament a fundraiser (through Throw Pink) for YAWC, because they know best how to support women in the community. Recreation is a crucial component to living a healthy life with mental wellness. Women face unique barriers to participation in recreation.

The tournament is inclusive to all who identify as female.

“The best part of having the honour of co-organizing the first women-only disc golf tournament in the Yukon is the collaborative nature. This whole process has really been organic, and the whole local community of female disc golfers has come together to make this event a success,” osaid tournament co-director and DISC-versity President, Christine Spencer.

Anyone can come and check out the fun and take part in our putting challenge. For every putt someone sinks, they will be entered into a draw, with prizes from Aroma Borealis, Alkan Air, local artists, Sourdoughnuts and other sponsors. Putts are $3 each or 4 for $10, with all proceeds going to YAWC.

“We don’t have a fundraising goal, but unofficially I’m aiming towards $3000 and we are already one-third of the way there! It’s so amazing how generous the community has been.

“This event will create space for current female disc golfers to expand their skills and introduce new women to the sport, but the overall idea for the event is to create a uniquely female disc-golfing experience,” said Spencer.

The event goes at the Mt. Mac Disc Golf Course on June 12.
