Yukon Awards To Be Bestowed

The Office of the Commissioner of Yukon is inviting Yukoners to nominate their peers for the following awards: the Order of Yukon, the Commissioner’s Award for Bravery and the Public Volunteer Service Award.

“Civic Pride is one of my pillars, as Commissioner of Yukon, and it is always an honour for me to recognize deserving Yukoners that were nominated by their peers,” said Angélique Bernard, the Commissioner of Yukon.

The Order of Yukon is the highest honour in the territory, equivalent to similar honours across the country. It was established under the Order of Yukon Act, in 2018, to recognize individuals who have demonstrated excellence and achievement and made outstanding contributions to the social, cultural or economic well-being of the Yukon and its residents. Since 2019, there have been 24 inductees into the Order of Yukon.

The Commissioner’s Award for Bravery recognizes individuals who have responded with great effort, at considerable personal risk and in hazardous circumstances, to save or safeguard, or attempt to save or safeguard, the life of one or more persons.

The Commissioner’s Award for Public Volunteer Service recognizes individuals who have demonstrated excellence and enduring achievement in any field of endeavour, making a significant contribution to the well-being of the Yukon and its residents.

There have been over 60 recipients of the Commissioner’s Award for Bravery and over 200 recipients of the Commissioner’s Award for Public Volunteer Service, since the awards creation, in 1980, by the late Commissioner Doug Bell, to honour both public volunteer service and bravery in the Yukon.

The awards will be presented, during the month of December at Taylor House, in intimate ceremonies. A video highlighting all of the award recipients, throughout the year, will be produced and broadcast on January 1, 2023, on the Commissioner of Yukon’s Facebook page and on Northwestel Community TV.

“We know that completing a nomination form can be intimidating and time consuming. For this reason, my office created a ‘How to write a powerful nomination’ document and [also] videos on some of the awards. They are available on our website,” said Bernard.

Yukoners are invited to visit the awards page on the Commissioner of Yukon website at www.commissionerofyukon.ca/awards. The site has information on the awards, as well as nomination forms to download. Paper copies of the nomination forms are available at Taylor House, 412 Main Street. Nominations for the Order of Yukon and the Commissioner’s Award for Bravery and for Public Volunteer Service close on Friday, October 28.
